Que faire et que voir : Provence ?

Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence

The small city that the artist Cezanne once called home is a must see. The Vielle Ville, the oldest part of the city, look straight out of the 18th-century city. Follow its winding, cobbled streets dotted with fountain after fountain. Enjoy outdoor markets, visit Cezanne’s workshop and eat at numerous local restaurants. Walk down the beautiful Cours Mirabeau, Aix’s main street, capped off by a magnificent fountain. Visitors can take a small drive outside Aix and climb Mt. Saint-Victoire, the most famous mountain in Provence and is featured in many of Cezanne’s paintings. Aix en Provence
Gorges du Verdon

Gorges du Verdon

Sometimes called the Europe’s Grand Canyon, the Gorges du Verdon is a popular and extremely scenic destination. Towering cliffs surround an unbelievably blue river that feeds into a large and unbelievably blue lake. The gorge itself is 15 miles long and 2000-feet straight down. Visitors can take scenic drives, climb, hike, swim in the lake, take out kayaks and paddleboats up the river, and many other activities. It is perfect for a day of leisure.
Roman Theater of Orange

Roman Theater of Orange

The town of Orange in Provence hosts one of the best preserved Roman theaters. Built in the 1st Century under Augustus, the theater served a Roman colony that had been founded in 40 BC. The Roman citizens once spent a lot of time there, attending races plays and other forms of entertainment. Today the theater hosts the village’s summer opera festival. Orange

Avignon

Avignon

Of the many beautiful, old cities in Provence filled with history and culture, Avignon is one of the most famous. The city has been considered a capital of culture ever since the popes sought refuge there in the 14th century. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can wander past restored medieval walls, an ancient bridge first built in the 12th century, and explore the impressive Gothic architecture of the Palais de Popes. A major arts festival, the Festival d’Avignon, attracts thousands every year for theater, dance, film, and street performances. Avignon
